Introduction to Java Programming

Description

Java is a complete development language, which can also be used to write applets that enhance both existing HTML pages and embedded web-based applications. Through lecture and hands-on labs, this course introduces students to all aspects of this high level language. Topics are presented at an intermediate level.

Audience

Application programmers and designers planning to develop applications to run in Java-enabled browsers or as a standalone executable.

Prerequisite

Programming language experience in C, C++, Visual Basic or Smalltalk, and familiarity with object-oriented concepts.

Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • understand the relationship among Java, HotJava, the Web, HTML, C, C++, and the Java Virtual machine
  • create Java programs using keywords, expressions and other Java language constructs
  • use Java's object-oriented features such as methods, data abstraction, classes, and inheritance in building GUI based applications
  • write Java applets and applications which take advantage of threads
  • write Java code utilizing built-in methods in the "Standard" Java Class libraries
  • write Java applets and programs that use the supported GUI components as well as fonts, text, graphics, images and sound
