MVS Concepts

Description

This course is designed to develop an understanding of MVS and ESA. The participant will learn the various components of operating systems, and MVS in particular. Particular attention is paid to dataset organization. This course prepares the participant for further training in all phases of data processing. The format includes lecture and exercises on paper.

Audience

Anyone with a desire to learn about MVS.

Prerequisite

None.

Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • describe IBM OS/390 system architecture
  • list the functions performed by an operating system
  • understand how JES manages job flow
  • understand how OS/390 performs task management
  • explain the concept of Virtual Storage and describe how it is managed in the OS/390 operating system
  • define paging
  • explain how data is represented in storage media
  • understand usage of binary and hexadecimal number systems
  • discuss the use of auxiliary storage, including DASD, tape, and printers
