Unix Basics

Description

This course acquaints new users to the Unix environment, the Korn Shell, and text editing. Multiple exercises reinforce the concepts.

Audience

Technical and non-technical personnel, including technical managers, programmers, and system and network administrators who need a robust understanding of Unix.

Prerequisite

None.

Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • create, list, manipulate, and set permission modes for files and directories
  • describe the relationship between the shell and the editor
  • use the vi editor to create and modify files
  • use regular statements and their special characters to edit files
  • issue shell commands using pipelines and background processing
  • establish a shell environment using special shell variables and the file named "profile"
  • use escape and quoting mechanisms in the shell and text editor
