Unix System V Administration

Description

This course provides an overview of the tools and utilities available under the Unix System V Operating System with respect to system administration. It gives the students insight into areas involved in the administration of a Unix computer system. The format includes lecture and lab sessions.

Audience

System administrators, technical users, and programmers who are involved in managing a Unix system.

Prerequisite

Introduction to Unix and Unix Shell Programming or equivalent experience.

Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • understand the duties of the Unix System Administrator
  • describe basic hardware and software components
  • understand the layout of the Unix file system
  • describe the boot and shutdown processes
  • initiate system backup commands and procedures
  • understand the login program
  • use crash to analyze an active system or system dump
  • administer cron, at, and batch jobs
  • monitor system performance using sar
  • monitor system usage with accounting software
  • administer the uucp software system
  • administer the lp spooling system
  • describe security checks and balances
